When a man is struggling, he rarely struggles alone. The people closest to him — a partner, parents, siblings, adult children — are living the effects of his mental health, even when they don’t fully understand what they’re witnessing. Avoidance, irritability, emotional shutdown, erratic behavior, withdrawal — these things land on a family in ways that create confusion, pain, and a gradual erosion of trust and connection.
Family therapy at Merit Wellness in Austin is designed to address that dynamic. It’s not about assigning blame or relitigating the past. It’s about building understanding, repairing ruptures, and helping families develop the skills they need to support recovery without losing themselves in the process.
Experts who care
Research consistently shows that family involvement improves outcomes in mental health treatment. When the people in a man’s closest relationships understand what he’s working on — the patterns he’s trying to change, the tools he’s building, the history he’s processing — they are better positioned to support the process rather than inadvertently work against it.
Families often develop their own patterns in response to a loved one’s mental health struggles. A partner may have learned to manage around his moods. A parent may have spent decades either rescuing or avoiding. These patterns are understandable — they developed as survival strategies. But they often need to shift as the person in treatment begins to change, and family therapy is the space where that shift can happen collaboratively.
Our Philosophy
Merit Wellness’s family program is integrated with the broader clinical work our clients are doing in treatment. This matters because family therapy that is disconnected from individual treatment can work at cross-purposes — addressing surface dynamics without the context needed to create meaningful change.
Our clinical team works with families to:
Family sessions are facilitated by our licensed clinical team and scheduled in a way that works with each family’s circumstances.
Healing doesn’t happen in isolation.
Family therapy at Merit Wellness is available as a component of the broader treatment experience. It is most effective when it is coordinated with the individual clinical work, the life coaching process, and the overall treatment plan. Our team communicates internally to ensure that family sessions build on rather than duplicate the work happening in individual and group therapy.
The goal is not to fix the family. The goal is to give everyone involved — the man in treatment, his partner, his family members — better tools for understanding each other and navigating forward together.
Partners of men in treatment often carry a significant burden. They may have been managing the household, managing the relationship, and managing their own distress about a situation they’ve watched unfold over months or years. Our family therapy program creates a space where partners feel genuinely heard — not just as supports for the client, but as people whose own experiences matter and deserve attention.
We also recognize that not every partner wants to engage in therapy, and that the decision to participate is entirely voluntary. We work with whatever family engagement is present and possible.
